What is a covalent compound?

Cation
What prefixes are used for covalent compounds?
Mono-; Di-; Tri-; etc..
*Mono only used on anion
*“ide” always comes after second element
What is an ionic compound?
A metal and a nonmetal
Which comes first in a ionic compound, anion or cation?
Cation (usually metal) named first
Anion (usually nonmetal)
What are the rules of naming the cation in the ionic compound?
If the cation has a fixed charge, the name is the neutral name
If the cation has a variable charge (groups 3-12), the neutral name is followed by the roman numeral in parantheses of the charge
What are the rules of naming the anion in the ionic compound?
If the aion has one atom, the suffix is “ide” added
If the anion has more than one atom, the suffix “ate” is added
