CHAPTER 5 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an acid?
Molecular compounds that release (H+) cations when dissolved in water
What is a base?
Ionic compounds that release (OH-) anions when dissolved in water
What is an electrolyte?
Dissolve into ions and conduct electricity
What is a non-electrolyte?
Dissolve into ions and DO NOT conduct electricity
How do you determine electronegativity from the periodic table?
Electronegativity increases as the periods go up and go right
F = higest
Fr = lowest
What is a nonpolar covalent bond in difference in electronegativity?
<0.5
What is a polar covalent bond in difference in electronegativity?
0.5-1.7
What is a ionic bond in difference in electronegativity?
> 1.7
Usually compounds with elements from group 7 w/ 1 or 2 are usually ionic
What is the dispersion force?
The force that acts between all molecules
When is the dispersion force stronger?
Between more polarizable/larger molecules
What is the dipole force?
A force that acts only between molecules that have a dipole moment (magnitude of polarity)
When is the dipole force strongest?
Bigger/more widely spaced charges
