CHAPTER 1 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Study of drugs.
Pharmacology
Any substance that when taken may modify one’s physiological function
Drug
Use of specific drugs to prevent, treat, or diagnose a disease
Pharmacotherapeutics
Study of how the body absorbs, distributes, and eliminates the drug
Pharmacokinetics
Analysis of what the drug does to the body
Pharmacodynamics
Study of the harmful effects of chemicals
Toxicology
Refer to the compounds structure
Chemical name
Shorter and derived from the chemical name
Generic name
Name given by pharmaceutical company
Trade name (brand name)
In the development of a new drug it involves extensive preclinical and clinical studies. What do you call this process?
Drug approval process
Information about the dosage range over which the drug is effective as well as the peak response that can be expected from the drug
Dose-response curve
Indicate that there will be no further increment in the response of point at which there is no further increase in the response of the drug
Plateau/Maximal Effect/Ceiling Effect
Dose that produces a given response in a specific amplitude
Potency
It represents the graded response to a drug as it would occur in a single individual or in homogeneous population
Quantal Dose-Response Curves and the Median Effective Dose
Those at least 50% of the population respond to the drug in a specified manner
Median effective dose
As dosages of the drug continue to be increased, adverse or toxic affects may become apparent
Median Toxic Dose
Indicator of the drug’s safety, it indicates that the greater the value of the TI the safer the drug is.
Therapeutic Index
