Q

What is the Binomial System?

A

It is an internationally agreed system of naming species, where the scientific name is made up of 2 parts, the Genus/Generic name (starts with Capital letter) and Species (Lowercase).

Q

Why is it important to classify organisms?

A
  • It is possible to identify those most at risk of extinction.
  • It is possible to understand evolutionary relationships.

Q

What is the description of a Vertebrate?

A

All vertebrates have a vertebral column (spine), along with a skull protecting the brain and a pair of jaws (usually with teeth)

Q

What is Classification based on?

A
  • Classification is based on Morphology and Anatomy.
  • Morphology is the study of the form/outward appearance of an organism.
  • Anatomy is the detailed body structure determined by dissection.

14
Q

How has DNA revolutionized classification?

A
  • Organisms that share the same DNA sequence are more likely to be similar to each other.
  • This is because each species has a distinct number of chromosomes and unique sequence of bases, making it identifiable and distinguishable.

15
Q

What is Cladistics?

A

It is a process of biological classification that involves organisms being grouped together based on 1 or more shared characteristics from the groups last common ancestors.

16
Q

What are the 5 kingdoms?

A

Animals, Plants, Fungi, Prokaryotes, Protoctists.

17
Q

Why aren’t Viruses considered a Kingdom?

A
  • This is because they lack cell membranes, cytoplasm, and ribosomes, as well as lack characteristics. They do not feed, respire, excrete, or grow.
  • Reproduction occurs only if provided materials by host cell.
18
Q

What is the plant kingdom?

A
  • Plants are multicellular, autotrophic, photosynthetic organisms that have a cell wall made of cellulose.
  • There are 2 groups; Ferns and flowering plants (Monocots & Dicots)
19
Q

What is the animal kingdom?

A
  • Animals are multicellular, heterotrophic organisms with no cell wall or cholorplasts.
20
Q

What are the 5 groups of Vertebrates?

A

Mammals, Birds, Fish, Amphibia, Reptiles

21
Q

What are the 4 groups of Invertebrates? (Arthropods)

A

Crustacea, Arachnids, Myriapods, Insects

22
Q

What is the Fungi kingdom?

A

Fungi are multicellular organisms made up of thread-like hyphae with many nuclei distributed in the cytoplasm.

23
Q

What is the Prokaryote kingdom?

A

Prokaryotes are single-celled (unicellular) organisms with NO NUCLEUS.

24
Describe the structure of a bacterial cell
-Very small -Cell wall made of a mixture of proteins, sugars and lipids -Some have a slime capsule -Each cell contains a single circular strand of DNA - NO NUCLEUS. Chromosomes are suspended in the cytoplasm
25
What is the Protoctist kingdom?
These are single-celled (unicellular) ogranisms WITH NUCLEUS. There are 2 main types; Protophyta (resemble plants by making own food) & Protozoa (resemble animal by taking in solid food)
26
What are the features of viruses?
-Viruses have a central core of RNA or DNA -They have no nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane (instead have protein coat) -Protein coat called capsid is made of regularly packed protein units called capsomeres - Nucleic acid core is a coiled strand of RNA
