Chapter 1 Flashcards
(29 cards)
Chemistry
Knowledge that deals with the behavior of matter.
Matter
Study that makes up things and has mass.
Mass
Measures how much matter is in an object
Weight
Measures the force of gravity on an object.
Physical Change
An alteration of appearance without a chemical change.
Chemical Change
A change in its chemical identity.
Solid
Maintains its shape and volume.
Liquid
Definite Volume, not definite shape.
Gas
no definite volume or shape
Substance
Pure matter. It has a definite composition that does not vary form one substance to another. EX: gold
Mixture
2 or more substances that mix together, but not chemically.
Homogeneous
Has the same composition and appearance. EX: salt and water
Heterogeneous
The appearance does not stay the same. EX: sand and water
Element
Cannot be broken down into something more simple.
Atom
The smallest part of an element
Compound
2 or more elements that are chemically combined. They have a fixed ratio.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the measure of how much matter is in a substance. Weight is the amount of gravitational force on an object.
What are some properties of matter?
Their substance, mixture, elements, solid, liquid, gas, etc.
What are some measurements of matter?
KILO-- 10^3 CENTI-- 10^-2 MILI-- 10^ -3 MICRO-- 10^ -4 NANO-- 10^ -5
What is Density?
It is mass/volume
What is energy?
The ability to change matter either physically or chemically.
How do you convert Celsius to Kelvin?
K= C+ 273.15
EX: Body temperature is 37 degrees C. What is it in Kelvin?
K= 37+ 273.15
K= 310.
How do you measure heat?
Heat is measured in calories or joules.
1 calorie= 4.184J
Alchemy
The primitive form chemistry.
