Chapter 5 Flashcards
(12 cards)
Chemical equation
A shorthand for a chemical change, using symbols and formulas instead of words
Reactants
Substances to the left of the arrow
Products
Substances to the right of the arrow
Formula mass
The sum of masses of the atoms represented in the formula of a substance
Molar mass
The mass of one mole of a substance has the same number as formula mass and atomic mass. It is expressed in g/ mol
Stoichiometry
“Measuring elements”. Involves the quantitative relationship
Aqueous solution
Solution that has water in the solvent.
Concentrated solution
Has a relatively large amount of solute compared to solvent
Dilute solution
Only has a little solute in a large amount of solvent
Percent volume
(Volume of solute/ volume of solution) 100%
Percent mass
(Mass of solute/ mass of solution) 100%
Steps in a stoichiometric equation
- Need a balanced equation
- Need the molecular mass
- Use stoichiometry (the coefficients)
- Convert it to weight
