Chapter 8 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Oxidation
Occurs when a substance gains Oxygen atoms or loses H atoms or loses electrons or when its oxidation number increases.
OIL
Reduction
Occurs when a substance loses oxygen atoms or gains hydrogen atoms or gains electrons or when its oxidation number decreases.
RIG
Oxidizing reagent
The substance that causes oxidation.
Reducing reagent
The substance that causes reduction.
Electrochemical Cell
Where the transfer of electrons in a redox reaction occurs.
Electrode
Where the electrons are transferred.
Anode
Where the oxidation occurs
Cathode
Where the reduction occurs
Battery
A series of connected cells.
Fuel cell
Generates electricity by oxidizing a fuel in a cell to which the fuel and oxygen are supplied continuously
Corrosion
Look it up
Oxygen
An oxidizing aren’t that is essential to life. It reacts with metals and non metals to form oxides.
Bleach
An oxidizing agent that removes unwanted color from fabric or other material.
Catalyst
An agent that speeds up the reaction without itself being used up.
Photosynthesis
The reduction of carbon dioxide
Half- reaction

Rules for determining oxidation numbers
- An atom in its elemental form has an oxidation of 0.
- If an atom is an ion, the oxidation number is equal to its charge.
- Hydrogen and oxygen in compounds have an oxidation number of 1+ and 2-. (H= 1+, O= 2-)
- in a poly tonic ion or molecule, the charges have to be equal to the charges of the ions or molecules.
