CHAPTER 1 (GENE EXPRESSION) Flashcards
(8 cards)
whats gene expression
process where the information in a gene is read and used to synthesize a protein
Genetic information is linearly transferred from DNA to protein.
what proteins u can make depends on___
___what genes you have
DNA -> ___ -> _____
DNA -> RNA -> Protein
what is
1. transcription
2. translation
- transcription: The process of making RNA from a DNA template.
- translation: The process of making a protein from an mRNA template.
whats reverse transcription
The transfer of genetic information from RNA to DNA by the enzyme reverse transcriptase found in retrovirus
why do we need reverse transcription
it allows us to make cDNA (complementary DNA) from mRNA and obtain a gene sequence without the introns
whats introns and exons
introns - non coding regions of the gene
exons - coding region of the gene (they stay and expressed)
what is gene expression of eukaryotes gene into bacteria means?
refers to the process of transferring a gene from a eukaryotic organism (like a human or plant) into bacterial cells (such as E. coli) and then getting the bacteria to produce the protein encoded by that gene.
