What are nouns?
A word that refers to a person, place, or thing
E.g The “student” is doing her “homework “.
What are the 2 types of nouns?
Common & Proper
What are the 2 differences between common nouns and proper nouns?
- Common nouns don’t refer to names or titles. Proper nouns do
- Common nouns aren’t capitalized (unless at the beginning of the sentence), proper nouns are.
What is the difference between concrete and abstract nouns?
- Concrete nouns represent things you can see or touch
- Abstract nouns represent things you can’t see or touch, such as c9ncepts, ideas, or qualities
How to decide between a concrete noun and a abstract noun?
- Can I put the article “it” infront of the word?
- Is the word used as the subject or object of the sentence?
What is a direct object vs. An indirect object?
- Direct object received the action directly
- Indirect object receives the action indirectly
What’s the difference between countable nouns and non-countable nouns
- Countable nouns can be counted
- Non countable nouns can’t be counted
Never put an indefinite article in front of a non countable noun
What are pronouns?
Words that take the place of a noun
What’s the similarity between pronouns, nouns, and possessive adjective?
- Pronouns, like nouns, can be the subject or the object of a sentence
- Possessive adjectives modify nouns

A word that modifies a noun or pronoun
What are verbs?
A word that indicates an action, state, or occurrence

What is an action verb?
- Tells us what it’s subject is doing.
- Most verbs are action verbs
What is a linking verb?
Joins the subject of a sentence to one or more words that describe/identify the subject
What is a helping/auxiliary verb
Used before the main verb to show…
1. The tense of the verb
2. Can show the passive voice
3. Can give special meaning
What is a modal auxiliary verb?
A hel9ing verb that comes before the main verb and expresses probability, obligation, ability, or necessity
What are adverbs?
A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb
How to identify an adverb?
1.Ask yourself if the word answers the questions of how, when, or where
2. Ends in -ly
What are prepositions?
- A word that indicates time, place, or means.
- Used to relate a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence
What is a prepositional phase?
The combination of the preposition and its noun or pronoun (the object of the preposition)
What are conjunctions?
A word that joins or connects other words, phrases, or clauses
