What is an irregular verb?
Forms it’s past tense ot past participle or both in a different way form the usual -ed ending
What are the 3 principal parts of irregular verbs?
- Simple (infinitive)
- Past form
- Past participle
When can you shift verb tenses?
When you want to change the time of the action
What is a complex sentence?
1.sentences that contain 2 or more verbs that carry different tenses according to the times at which the actions take place
2. Contain independent and dependent clause
What’s an independent clause?
1.Group of words (sub and verbs) that can be a simple sentence
2.The words can stand alone as a sentence
3.Is a complete thought
E.g The students worked all night long
What’s an dependent clause?
1.Cannot stand alone as a simple sentence
2. Is an incomplete thought
E.g because their assignments were due in the morning
What is a sequence of tenses?
Refers to the proper use of verb tenses in complex senses
Both have independent and dependent clause
How do independent and dependent clauses relate?
The verb tenses of the independent clause determines the tense of the verb in the dependent clause
How to form the present perfect tense?
Has or have + past participle of the main verb
E.g has worked/ have worked
How to form the past perfect tense?
Had + past participle of the main verb
E.g had worked
What is the present perfect tense?
Describes an action that started in the past and continues to the present time
E.g Elena has worked at the hospital for 10 years
What is the present perfect tense?
Can also describe an action that has just taken place, or an action whose exact time in the past is indefinite
E. She has just found a new job
What is the past perfect tense?
Describes an action that occurred before another activity or before anlhrer point in the past
E.g Elena has worked at the hospital for 10 years before she moved away
What is the difference between the active and passive voice?
- Active : the subject does the acting
- Passive: the subject is acted upon
Why is the active voice better?
Produces a stronger sentence
When to use the passive voice?
- You are in a position of authority and required to give bad news
- When the subject has been acted upon is more important than the doer of the action
- When the action is more important
How to form the passive voice?
Verb that consists of a dorm of be (am, is, are etc) + the past participle of the main verb
E.g cars & trikes are built in Oshawa
What is the subjunctive?
- A verb form used to express untruths, desires, or demands
- Found in some dependent clauses
E.g she demanded that he arrive on time
What are other problems with verbs?
- Do not use more than one modal auxiliary (can, may, might) with the main verb
E.g ethan ought not to drop that course - Do not use should of would of, could of, to mean should have, would have, or could have
