What is Coordination?
Can link 2 independent clauses to form a compound sentence
E.g I was sick, but I went to work anyway
What is a compound sentence?
Result of using Coordination can combine sentences that are related and of equal importance in 3 different ways
What is the 1st way to combine sentences using Coordination?
Combine independent clauses(or complete thoughts) is to use a comma + a coordinating conjunction
What is the 2nd way to combine sentences using Coordination?
When the 2 independent clauses are simpyk uses to combine 2 items don’t place a comma
E.g I had bacon and eggs for breakfast
What is the 3rd way to combine sentences using Coordination?
Use a semicolon, and adverbial conjunction, and a comma
What is an adverbial conjunctions?
Also called conjunctive adverbs
Give the compound sentence more emphasis
If an adverbial conjunction connects 2 independent clauses place a semicolon
What is the 4th way to combine sentences using Coordination?
Use a semicolon
The semicolon takes the place of the conjunction
What is Subordination?
The method used to combine sentences whose ideas are not equally important.

How to combine sentences using Subordination?
When you combine sentences using Subordination, you make the more important idea an IC and the less important idea a DC, the result is a complex sentencd
What’s a complex sentence?
Each idea is a clause
The main idea is called the IC and the unimportant idea is the DC
To make sentences with dC, use connecting words: subordinating conjunctions and relative pronouns
How to use a subordinating conjunction to create a complex sentence
- To introduce a contrast
- To introduce a cause
- To show time
- To show place
- To show purpose
Commas with IC and DC
Use a comma when you begin a sentence with a DC
Do not use a comma when you begin a sentence with a DC
How to use a relative pronoun to create a complex sentence
2 sentences can be combined using a relative pronoun
Put the relative pronoun directly after the word it refers to
What are the 2 types of relative clauses?
- Restrictive clause
- Non restrictive clause
