Chapter 12 Flashcards
(13 cards)
a decrease volume of circulating blood in the body
hypovolemia
an accumulation of air or gas in the pleural space that progressively increases pressure in the chest that interferes with cardiac function with potentially fatal results
tension pneumothorax
the increased pressure in an artery with each contraction of the ventricle
systolic pressure
the contraction, or period of contraction, of the heart, especially that of the ventricle
systole
a developmental defect in which a portion of the spinal cord or meninges may protrude outside of the vertebrae and possibly even outside of the body, usually at the lower third of the spine in the lumbar area
spina bifida
the pressure that remains in the arteries during the relaxing phase of the heart’s cycle (diastole) when the left ventricle is at rest
Diastolic pressure
the relaxation, or period of relaxation, of the heart especially of the ventricle
diastole
blood pressure that is lower than the normal range
hypotension
describes a condition in which the patient has to few red blood cells, resulting in a decreased ability to transport oxygen throughout the body via the bloodstream
anemic
a dangerous condition in which the body’s tissues and cells do not have enough oxygen
hypoxia
exchange of air between the lungs and the environment, spontaneously by the patient or with assistance from another person, such as an EMT
ventilation
breathing that occurs without assistance
spontaneous breathing
a partial or complete accumulation of air in the pleural space
pneumothorax
