Q

What are the main characteristics of Gewürztraminer, Viognier and Albariño?

A

Gewurtztraminer is an aromatic variety which grows best in cool and moderate climates. Produces powerfully scented wines ranging from dry to sweet. G grapes accumulate high levels of sugar during ripening. G wines are full bodied with low to medium acidity. Pronounced floral aromas as well as stone fruit and tropical fruit flavours. Very good examples can develop flavours of honey and dried fruit in the bottle. Most famous in Alsace AOC, producing some of the region’s highest quality grand cru wines.

Viognier is an aromatic grape variety mainly grown in moderate climates. Dry with low to medium acidity, high alcohol and a medium to full body. Floral aromas and stone fruit flavours. Some oak ageing may occur. Condrieu AOC in Northern Rhône is famous for its Viognier.

Albarino is a white grape variety grown in the cool Rias Baixas DO……cooler, wetter and cloudier. Produces refreshing white wines. Dry, high acidity, medium bodied with citrus through to stone fruit. Unoaked.
