Chapter 16 Flashcards
(9 cards)
Homogenous Equilibria
All products and reactants in the same state
Heterogeneous Equilibria
Not all in the same state
If Q=K
the reaction is at equilibrium
Q is greater than K
The reaction will proceed to the left (reactants side, reverse reaction)
Q is less than K
The reaction will proceed to the right (products side, forward reaction)
Reactant Quotient
is the product of the product concentrations over the product of the reactant concentrations, with each concentration raised to a power equal to the corresponding stoichiometric coefficient in the balanced chemical equation.
A large equilibrium constant (K>1) (>100)
indicates that products are favored at equilibrium
A small equilibrium constant (K<1)(<0.01)
indicates that reactions are favored at equilibrium
Le Châtelier’s Principle
A system at equilibrium will react to stress by shifting in the direction that will partially offset the effect of the stress
