  • A normal rate
    • Adult 12 - 20 breathe per minute
    • Child 15 - 30 breaths per minute
    • Infant 30 to 60 breaths per minute
  • A regular pattern of inhale and exhale
  • Clear and equal breath sounds on both sides of the chest
  • Regular and equal chest rise and fall
  • adequate depth (tidal volume)
  • Unlabored; without adventious (abnormal) breathe sounds (wheezing, stridor)

A
  • reports difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • altered mental status associated with shallow or slow breathing
  • adult patient appears anxious or restless
  • pede patient appears sleepy or listless
  • the respiratory rate is too fast or too slow

  • The breathing rhythm is irregular
  • the skin is pale, cool, clammy or cyanotic
