Wrote the Impending Crisis of the South. He hated slavery and blacks, tried to prove that nonslaveholding whites suffered the most from slavery
John Brown
Crazy man who led followers to invade Kansas at Pottawatomie Creek in May of 1856. This act even surprised extreme abolitionists because he beat proslaverites to death. Also, he later developed a plan to invade the raid Harper’s Ferry, seize arms, call a slave revolt, take over the South, and free the slaves. He was soon hanged.
James Buchanan
He was the 15th president of America and a democrat who supported slavery, but wanted equal pro/anti slavery factions. He approved of the Lecompton Constitution as well.
Charles Sumner
He was a leading abolitionist who attacked a democratic administrator during the “Crime Against Kansas” speech which denounced slavery supporters.
John C. Fremont
Republican candidate running against Buchanan. He was the first ever republican candidate running against slavery.
Roger Taney
He was a justice at the Scott v Sandford case who said that no slave could be a citizen of the U.S.
John C. Breckenridge
Democrat from the South elected as candidate for presidential election. He wanted unrestricted slavery and the annexation of Cuba.
John Bell
The Constitutional Union Party candidate who tried to recruit to the constitution to prove their positions.
Abraham Lincoln
Had senatorial debates against Stephen Douglas for Illinois and lost. However, morally, he won and tried to go for president. He was a good lawyer, had common sense, was a decent debater.
Jefferson Davis
Was the president of the Confederate States of America. He had the belief that he would have the power to place tariffs and restrict slavery as he pleased.
John Henry Crittenden
Proposed that the 36, 30 line would be extended to the Pacific through the Crittenden Amendment. Lincoln opposed because he had to stick to his principles and not extend slavery.
Self-Determination
The right of the people to choose their own form of government- the reason for southern secession.
Southern Nationalism
The belief that the South would become its own nation just like America split from England in 1776.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, revealing the truth behind slavery. This could be considered the leading cause of the Civil War because it became extremely popular and hundred thousand copies were sold. Britain and France got a hold of it too and wanted to support the North to go against slavery if it came to this issue.
The Impending Crisis of the South
Written by Hilton R. Helper who hated slavery and blacks. Through his novel, he tried to prove that nonslaveholding whites suffered most from slavery.
New England Emigrant Aid Society
Antislavery organization which was sent to Kansas to forestall the South and make a Profit. They wanted to prevent the South from settling in Kansas.
Pottawatomie Creek Massacre
John Brown led a band of his followers to Pottawatomie Creek in retaliation for the sack of Kansas; 5 men hacked to pieces. Pierce administration failed to keep order & uphold honest elections. Democratic Party more divided over “Bleeding Kansas”.
Lecompton Constitution
The proslavery plan of Kansas government where settlers are only allowed to vote for or against slavery. If they voted against slavery, a provision would already be embedded which would protect existing slave owners. Basically slavery regardless of the final vote.
Bleeding Kansas
A sequence of violent abolitionists and proslavery elements that took place in the KS-NE territory.
American (Know-Nothing) Party
Hated immigrants. group of prejudice people who formed a political party during the time when the kkk grew. anti-catholics and anti-foreign. they were also known as the american party.
Dred v Scott outcomes
Justice Roger Taney said that no slave could be a citizen of the U.S.. The court said a congress cannot outlaw slavery, as that would go against the 5th amendment saying that a person’s property cannot be taken without due process of law. The court further concluded that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional because it banned slavery North of the 36 30 line and doing so was against the 5th amendment.
Even if slavery isn’t in the constitution, the 10th amendment says anything not in the constitution is for the states to decide and southern states= majority and wanted slavery.
Dred v Scott Background
Dred Scott was a slave who was brought to Missouri by his master were he lived for many years. After his master’s death, he sued for freedom from his new master, claiming that he had been in free territory and was therefore free. Missouri supreme court ruled Scott free, but the U.S. supreme Court Overturned the decision.
Panic of 1857
Caused because of inflation, CA gold rush, overproduction of grain, crimean war, overspeculation, railroads, land. The effects of this was that 5,00 businesses failed, unemployment, North was hit hard, South had favorable cotton prices and Cotton was King.
