Bull Run
Location of the first battle of the Civil War. The press and public wanted a fight so Lincoln chose this place since it was a smaller confederate force. Union lost.
Stonewall Jackson
The military hero of the Battle of Bull Run. He managed to “stonewall” the confederate army against the larger Union force.
George B. McClellan
Became the general of the Army of the Potomac. He was very specific and wanted perfection. Never took risks and always held the army without movement until they were strong enough to advance.
Peninsula Campaign
Union’s grand plan for victory early i the war to capture Richmond and stop the war.
Robert E. Lee
The commander of the Confederate army but was not as cautious as McClellan and had twice the casualties.
Union Strategy
Block the South through the Ocean Free the Slaves Cut off the Confederates by taking GA and AL Capture Richmond Capture MI River

Started by Robert E. Lee in response to the Peninsula Campaign. The COnfederates won by putting the Union unto the ocean, but lost a lot more ppl than the Union
Anaconda Plan
replaced Peninsula Campaign when it failed.

Biggest Confederate threat to the union. Two ships fighting. Merrimack= confd.
Second Battle of Bull Run
Conflict between Lee and General John Pope in August 1862. It ended in a decisive victory by Lee that led to increased conflict and an attempt to get MD to seccede
Antieam
The bloodiest battle in American history. North halted Lee’s confed forces in MD. After this, England saw that they shouldn’t help the confed as much
13th ammendment
Prohibited all forms of slavery and involuntary sevitude. Former confed states had to ratify before being allowed back into the Union.
Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by Lincoln stating that as of Jan 1 1863, all slaves in the confed states are free. Not the border states because it may cause them to secede.
Caused the slaves to leave work immediately- loss in southern economy

Was in charge at battle after Burnside’s slaughter and stone wall jackson was killed at that battle

Turning point in war where it was made clear the Union would win
Gettysburg Address
Speech given by Lincoln saying that war had morals behind it and that was to free the slaves. People who died will not die in vain.
George Meade
Was given command after Hooker and right before the battle of Gettysburg. Was accident to go to Gettysburg, but won.
Pickett’s Charge
marked the last hope for the confed victory during Gettysburg, but right after, confed fell
Ulysses S. Grant
Union’s warhero- the best general the Union had. He won Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Lost shiloh
