This clause forced Germany to accept responsibility for the war. In doing so, Germany was forced to pay
War Guilt Clause, Reparations (war damages). Germany was forced to give up 13% of its land to the allies and all its colonies (Germany’s desire to reclaim lost lands). Germany was forced to give up 80% of its navy, air force and reduce its army to 100,000 soldiers (Germany’s desire to be strong and great again). Germany had to accept a ‘demilitarized zone’ in the Rhineland which is next to its industrial heartland the Ruhr (Germany evokes its right to defend itself).
