Blindsight
Case study of mail and slots.
High road/conscious track -visual perception track
Low road/unconscious automatic track- visual action track
Definition of consciousness
Our awareness of ourselves and our environment.
Dual processing/tracks
Conscious high track- deliberate actions that we know we are doing (problem solving, naming an object.)
Unconscious low track- automatic actions we may not be aware of (walking, acquiring phobias)
Selective attention
Our brain is able to choose a focus and select what to notice. The cocktail party effect. What we focus on and notice.
Selective inattention
What we are not focused on, and do not notice.
Inattentional blindness- failing to see objects when attention is directed elsewhere
Change blindness- failing to notice obvious changes
Choice blindness- choosing the same jam jar when it contains a different jam.
Circadian rhythm
A body’s natural 24 hour cycle matched with the day/night cycle of light/dark
Sleep cycles
Patterns of shifting through all the sleep stages over the night. Sleep cycles are 90 min on average
Sleep paralysis
When the brainstem blocks the motor cortex’s message and the muscles don’t move. Happens during REM sleep
North Americans sleep
North Americans sleep less than others and less than we used to. Perhaps because of light bulbs
What does sleep do for us?
Protects Restores and repairs Strengthens memories Facilitates problem solving Growth hormones
Sleep loss/deprivation makes us more likely to?
Lose brainpower Gain weight Get sick Be irritable Feel old
Insomnia
Persistent inability to fall asleep
Narcolepsy
Sleep attacks, at inopportune times.
Sleep apnea
Repeated awakening after breathing stops. Time in bed is not restorative sleep.
Hypnosis susceptibility
Divided consciousness theory
Social influence theory
Dependence
Becoming dependent on the drug. Addicted.
Tolerance
Diminished psychoactive effects after repeated use. It feeds addiction because it requires a larger dose to get the same effect.
Withdrawal
Painful symptoms of the body readjusting to absence of a drug.
