Chapter 4 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the purpose of controlled intersections?
They use signs or traffic lights to indicate who has the right-of-way and manage traffic flow.
What should you do at a four-way stop?
• The first vehicle to stop goes first.
• If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right-of-way.
• A vehicle turning left yields to a vehicle going straight or turning right.
What is an uncontrolled intersection?
An intersection without signs or traffic lights where drivers must yield to vehicles on their right.
What does a flashing red light mean?
Come to a complete stop and proceed only when it is safe.
When are you allowed to make a right turn on a red light?
After coming to a complete stop and yielding to pedestrians and other traffic, unless a sign prohibits it.
What are the rules for using a two-way left-turn lane?
• Use it only for turning left.
• Do not use it for passing or as a driving lane.
When is it legal to make a U-turn?
Only where permitted by signs, and never in intersections controlled by traffic lights, near curves, or on hills where visibility is limited.
What is the purpose of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes?
To reduce congestion by reserving lanes for vehicles with a specified minimum number of occupants or certain types of vehicles (e.g., buses, motorcycles).
How should you use a roundabout?
• Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
• Enter to the right and proceed counterclockwise.
• Use your right turn signal to exit.
What are the rules for passing another vehicle?
• Pass on the left only when it is safe and permitted.
• Do not exceed the speed limit when passing.
• Return to your lane only when you can see the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror.
What is the “two-second rule” for following distance?
Maintain at least a two-second gap between your vehicle and the one ahead to ensure safe stopping distance.
When merging onto a highway, what should you do?
• Use the acceleration lane to match the speed of traffic.
• Yield to vehicles already on the highway.
What should you do when parking on a hill?
• Turn the front wheels towards the curb when facing downhill.
• Turn the front wheels away from the curb when facing uphill.
• Always use the parking brake.

• Within 5 meters of a fire hydrant
• Within 6 meters of a crosswalk or intersection
• Where prohibited by signs.
