Chapter 4 Flashcards
(19 cards)
measures of central tendency
scores that represent the center of the distribution
mean
any set of raw scores is the sum of all of the scores divided by the total number of scores
median
middle score, with half the scores above and half the scores below, when all the scores have been ranked, or placed in numerical order
quartiles
divide the distribution into quarters
first quartile
one-quarter of the way through the distribution
second quartile
halfway through the distribution
third quartile
three-quarters of the way through the distribution
mode
the most frequent score
skew
refers to the general shape of a distribution when it is graphed as a frequency polygon
measures of variability
give an idea of how much scores in the distribution vary from that one average score
range
measure of the full extent of the scores in a distribution, from the highest to lowest
average mean distribution
average deviation of each score from the mean of teh distribution
deviation scores
mean deviations (“little x’s”)
variance
population is the actual computed variance of the population, whereas the sample variance is an estimate of the population variance using only the values in the sample
standard deviation
sqaure root of the variance (s)
scaled scores
scores that are adjusted via some type of scale (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division)
standard score
z score
standard score
scaled scores that have the same mean and standard deviation
z score distribution
has a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1
