Define stress
Nonspecific responses of the body to any demand placed upon it.
Define stressors.
Anything that upset/excite us.
Define eustress.
Positive stress
Define distress
Negative stress
LIST and Define the stages of the General Adaptation Syndrome.
Stressor- Maybe threating or exhilarating
Alarm- he body’s initial response to stress with changes that lower resistance
Resistance- If stressor continues, the body mobilizes to withstand stress and return to normal.
Homeostasis- Body maintains balanced state.
Exhaustion- Ongoing stressors deplete body’s resources so we function less than normal
Illness/Death- Body’s resources are not replenished and/ or additional stressors occur, making the bosy suffer breakdowns.
List the immediate effects of stress on the body
The brain becomes more alert, the digestive system slows down, your heart rate and blood pressure rise, the adrenal glands produce stress hormones, your breathing quickens, and your muscles tense.
What is fight or flight?
Quick bodily response to stress; the stressor has to be dealt with or be left quickly
What characteristics does a Type A person have? A Type B person? Type C?
A- Is Aggressive, hard Driven, impatient, and has high levels of distress due to the anger and aggression.
B- Is Easy Going, laid-back, patient, and has low levels of distress
C- Is Hard Driven, non confrontational, quiet, high levels of distress due to keeping emotions bottled up until one explodes.
How does stress affect the immune system?
It depresses the immune system, leads to an increased susceptibility to diseases, and interferes with the body’s natural ability to heal.
How do men handle stress? Women?
Men- Experience more aggression under stress, have more relaxation-oriented activity, and go through the bodily response, fight-or-flight.
Women- Shoulder majority of stress load, and tend to befriend.
List the ways that one can manage stress.
Through journaling, exercise, meditation/yoga, visualization, and healthy distractions
What is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
The repeated reliving of a trauma through nightmares/recollection.
What are some triggers for PTSD?
Anything that is traumatic to the person.
What are some symptoms of PTSD?
Symptoms include fear, worry, insomnia, drug and alcohol abuse, terror, and helplessness.
What factors make people thrive in face of adversity?
An Optimistic Attitude, self-efficacy, stress inoculation, secure personal relationships, and spirituality/ religiousness
List the time management skills.
Schedule your time, identify time robbers, focus on the task at hand, and turning elephants into hors d’oeuvres.
