what is voice leading?
the ways in which chords are produced by the motions of individual musical lines
what is counterpoint?
the combining of relatively independent musical lines / 2 independent melody lines happening at the same time
what are the main aspects of rhythm when writing a melodic line?
1.) keep the rhythm simple
2.) most duration being equal or longer than the duration of the beat
3.) the final note should occur on a strong beat
what is the main aspect of harmony in a melodic line?
1.) every note belongs to the chord that harmonizes it
what are the main aspects of contour in a melodic line?
1.) should be conjunct (step-wise)
2.) shape should be interesting
3.) one focal point (highest note)
what are the main aspects of leaps in a melodic line?
1.) avoid augmented intervals, 7ths, and anything greater than an octave
2.) >P4 should be approached and left in opposite direction
3.) small leaps in the same direction should outline a triad
