they were looking for S.S tattoos, these tattoos identify if you are a Nazi.

by putting a box under her feet to make her seem older and hiding her when the selections came to check on them. They keep her hidden by throwing blankets over her.
How did the Polish Kapo help Ruth feel better about what she had to do?
showing her how to make the bullets so they would misfire when the soldiers shot them.
Why can’t Ruth tell Leah that stealing is wrong?
growing up Leah’s first instinct was to steal because it was her only option to survive, and Ruth isn’t sure that she doesn’t need to steal anymore so she can’t tell her that she doesn’t have to anymore.
Why is everyone interested in reading the walls of the refugee centre?
the walls are covered with the names of the people who came to the center. They would be interested in reading the names because it helps them know they are not alone and someone in their family who they got separated from could have been there.
Why does Leah become excited?
her aunt’s name was on the wall and she was only there a week ago.
Why does Ruth take such delight in eating cherries?
she didn’t have fresh fruit for six years.
Why do you think the refugees are wearing so many clothes?
they will take all of your possessions unless you’re wearing them.

she wouldn’t have time to remember all her trauma, all these current events trigger flashbacks and causes her to remember.
Why do they have to get into the U.S. zone of Austria?
that’s where the Jewish refugees will be treated with respect and given freedom.
How does Zvi help Ruth on the train?
by taking her onto the top of the train for a bit of fresh air.
