4 principles of body mechanics
- weight close to body
- use leg, hip, gluteal muscles
- stack (align shoulders, hips and feet)
- reduce height or distance
What is lordosis?
Stomach is too anterior and butt is too posterior (swayback)
What is kyphosis?
Shoulders forward, (slouch)
What lift is used when there is a weak knee or ankle?
Squat lift- weaker forward, power grip, push up with stronger
Power lift
feet apart, bend nees, (like sitting) tighten back and ab muscles,, power grip, back locked
How far should you reach?
no more than 15-20 inches
What are the three categories of moves?
Emergency
Urgent
Non Urgent
When do you use Emergency move?
immediate danger to patient or EMT
fire, explosion, carbon monoxide, etc
When do you use Urgent move?
immediate threat to life of patient
When do you use non urgent move?
no life threatening condition, when you can move safely when ready

What are kinds of emergency moves?
armpit drag
shirt drag
blanket drag
What are kinds of non urgent moves?
walking, ground lift extremity lift, direct carry, draw sheet
What is rapid extraction?
used when you need urgent move to perform CPR or in accident with life threatening…uses backboards, support collars
How much weight can wheeled stretcher normally carry? Bariatric stretcher?
up to 600

What is position laying flat on back called?
Supine
What is recovery position?
lateral, laying on side (preferably left)
What is position face down called?
prone
Explain KED (Kendrick Extraction Device, Vacuum stretcher, Scoop stretcher, Basket stretcher, Reeves stretcher, Stair chair
KED - short for pt in sitting position
Vacuum - forms with beads and vacuum out air to make it firm
Scoop - assembled around pt. access from all sides and assemble
Basket - (Stokes) like long basket with chicken wire web - rough terrain, can already be on stretcher
Stair Chair - for narrow corridors, stairs,
Reeves - flexible stretcher
What is a neonatal isolette?
used to transfer a neonate to another facility, warm environment to prevent hypothermia, mounts in ambulance
