atque equidem vehementer exspectabam quinam isti viri boni testes huius manifesto deprehensi veneni dicerentur;
And I, for my part, was eagerly waiting (to see) who on earth those good men were, who might be alleged [to be] witnesses of this poison which was clearly detected;
nulli enim sunt adhuc nominati.
For none have been named yet.
But I have no doubt that they are very serious men, firstly, since they are friends of such a woman,
deinde eam provinciam susceperint, ut in balneas contruderentur,
then because they undertook that task to be crowded together into the baths,
a thing which she would never have accomplished, however powerful she might wish herself [to be], except with [the help of] men who are most honourable and most full of dignity.
But why do I speak about the dignity of those witnesses?
virtutem eorum diligentiamque cognoscite. ‘in balneis delituerunt.’ testes egregios!
Learn of their courage and diligence. ‘They hid themselves in the baths.’ Splendid witnesses!
‘Dein temere prosiluerunt.’ homines temperantes!
‘Then they rashly jumped out.’ What self-controlled men!
For thus you invent, that when Licinius had come, (when) he was holiding the box in his hand, trying to hand it over,
nondum tradidisset, tum repente evolasse istos praeclaros testes sine nomine;
had not yet handed it over, then suddenly those famous witnesses without name flew out;
but Licinius, when he had already stretched out his hand for the purpose of handing over the box,
he pulled it back and launched himself (rushed) in flight from that sudden attack of men.
O mighty [is the] force of truth, since she could defend herself aginst the abilities, cleverness, cunning of men, and against the made-up plots of all (men) by her own power easily!
