Demography
s the science that deals with
population characteristics or distribution
Demography Focus on 3 points:
Number of people in an area = total population
count
2. Factors affecting population size & and structure
3. Age and Sex structure of the population
. Total Population CountFactors increasing population size (Census)
Accurate method for determining the size and
characteristics of a population
Factors increasing population size
Births (natural cause)
Internal migration = immigration
(people moving to a country
Factors decreasing population size
Deaths (natural cause)
External migration = emigration
(people leaving a country)
The factors determining population size are
changed continuously so, methods exist for
estimating the size of the population between the
census years as:
- Arithmetical
method
of
population
estimation - Geometric method of population estimation
- Arithmetical
method
of
population
estimation
Population at the start of a year
+
Registered births during this year
–
Registered deaths during this year
=
Population at the start of next year
Arthimatric metod suitable for
Unsuitable for
• Suitable for: closed area as small village
• Not suitable for: opened area which has services as
hospital as births & deaths of people coming to it
from other places will be recorded so, estimated
population will be not accurate.
- Geometric
method
of
population
estimation
Birth rate
