Judiciary Act of 1789
Definition: Created the beginning of the three tiered federal court and established the US Supreme Court as the head of the Judicial branch
Significance: Supreme Court was he mediator of all disputes between state and federal government
Bill of Rights
Definition: added to the constitution primarily to address fears from the Anti-Federalists during the ratification of the constitution. They feared it didn’t provide sufficient protection against abuses of power by the federal government
Significance: gave us a list of our basic rights and placed limits on the federal government
Hamilton’s “Report on Manufactures”
Definition: encouraged manufactures in the US, after realizing agriculture is not he most productive but the only productive species of industry
Significance: big boom in manufacturing plants and goods
Bank of the United States
Definition: needed because the government had debt from the revolutionary war and each state had a different currency. Alexander Hamilton conceived the bank to handle the colossal war debt, creating a standard form of currency.
Significance: created the dollar bill that we use today
Hamilton’s “Report on Public Credit”
Definition: analyzed the financial standing of the US and made recommendations on how to get out of debt
Significance: offered recommendations on how to get out of debt and strengthen the financial standing
Proclamation of Neutrality
Definition: a formal announcement that George Washington declaring the nation neutral in the conflict between France an Britain
Significance: France took this as a betrayal to them
Whiskey Rebellion
Definition: a rebellion on the taxation of distilled spirits
Significance: the first time the government used military force to exert authority over its citizens
Jay’s Treaty
Definition: averted war with Britain again and established a ten year trade treaty between the US and Britain
Significance: first step to having good relations with Britain
XYZ Affair
Definition: a confrontation between the US and the Republican France that led the undeclared Quasi-war
Significance: Ended the American-France alliance
Naturalization Act
Definition: increased the period necessary for immigrants to become naturalized American citizens
Significance: first rules the United States had on becoming an official US citizen
Alien and Sedation Acts
Definition: four bills that were passed by the Federalists after the French Revolution
Significance: protected American against “dangerous” aliens
Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Definitions: when Kentucky an Virginia legislatures took the Alien and Sedation were unconstitutional
Significance: was thought to be a direct violation of the Constitution
