What is a turnpike trust?
When the government divided the main road network into sections, they rented it out to groups of business people. Those groups were called turnpike trusts.
Define ‘toll’.
A small fee paid to use a road or a bridge.
Define ‘locomotives’.
A steam engine that moves wheels along a track or rails.
Why were transport improvements needed?
- The roads were in terrible state and not well maintained.
- To make transporting people and goods more convenient.
- They needed a fast and reliable way to transport goods.
Define ‘canal’
A long, narrow man-made channel of water.
Why were canals used?
Roads were still too bumpy to transport fragile goods, such as pottery, and heavy goods, such as iron ores. So, they used canals as a fast and reliable way to transport fragile or heavy goods.

What does ‘industrial’ mean?
It is another word for work.

Britain had a lot of raw materials such as ores and cotton, making it easier to produce goods. - There were lots of brilliant inventors.
At this time, there were many great inventors that lived in Britain, and they created technology and machines which sped up the industrial business.
How does the building of a factory lead to the growth of a town?
When building a factory, the workers would want to move closer to the factory. Factory owners would build and rent out houses to the workers, and people began setting up shops so that the workers could buy food and drinks. Eventually, roads, churches, schools and places of entertainment were built.
