Q

What are Flat bones?

A

Bones that are thin, flattened, and usually curved; contain two thin layers of compact bone sandwiched between a layer of spongy bone.

Q

What is a Epiphyses?

A

the ends of long bones; each end is composed of a thin layer of compact bone enclosing an area filled with spongy bone

16
Q

What does Articular Cartilage do?

A

It covers the external surface of the epiphyses and provides a smooth, slippery surface that decreases frcition at joint surfaces

17
Q

What is the Epiphyseal line?

A

A thin line of bony tissue spanning the epiphysis that looks a bit different from the rest of the bone in that area.

18
Q

What is a Epiphyseal plate?

A

A flat plate of hyaline carilage seen in young growing bone. (causes the lengthwise growth of a long bone)

19
Q

Where is Yellow Marrow Cavity found and what is it?

A

Found in the Medullary cavity. It is a cavity of a shaft; primarily a storage area for adipose (fat) tissue.

20
Q

What is Red blood marrow and where is it found?

A

It is found in the cavities of spongy bone of flat and the epiphyses of some long bones; It is where red blood cells are produced

21
Q

What are bone markings?

A

Bumps, holes, and ridges located on the surface of bones (reveal where muscles, tendons and ligaments were attatched and where blood vessels and nerves passed)

22
Q

How many categories of bone markings are there and what are the names?

A
  1. Projections or Processes (grow out from the bone)
  2. Depressions or Cavities (indentations in the bone)
23
Q

What is Osteocytes?

A

Mature bone cells

24
Q

What are Osteoblasts?

A

Bone building cells

25
What are osteoclasts?
Bone destroying cells
26
What is a Lacunae?
tiny cavities in bones or cartilage where osteocytes are found
27
What is a Lamellae?
Concentric circles in which the Lacunae are arranged
28
What are Central (Haversian) canals and what is their function?
Canals in bones that are surrounded by lamellae and run lengthwise through the body matrix, carrying blood vessels and nerves to all aread of the bone
29
What is a Haversian System or osteon?
Each complex consisting of central canal and matrix rings
30
Function of Canaliculi and what are they?
Tiny bone canals that form a transportation system that connects all the bone cells to the nutrient supply through the hard bone matrix
31
What does the the Perforating (Volksman's) canals do?
the communication pathway from the outside of the bone to its interior
32
What gives hardness to the bone?
Calcium salts deposited in the matrix
33
What gives the bone flexibilty and strength?
Organic parts such as the collage fibers
