Chapter 7 Skeletal system part 3 notes Flashcards
(25 cards)
The Axial skeleton forms into how many parts?
- The skull The Vertebral column The bony Thorax
The axial skeleton includes what?
Head, Neck, Trunk Skull Hyoid Bone Vertebral column Thoracic cage Sternum
What does the Pectoral Girdle connect to?
Scapula, Clavicle, Arms
What does the Pelvic Girdle connect to?
Coxal bones, Legs
What two bones form the skull?
The Cranium and the Facial bones
What is the function of the Cranium?
Protects the fragile brain tissue
What is the function of the facial bones?
Holds the eyes in the anterior position and allows the facial muscles to show our feelings through smiles or frowns
What are Sutures?
Interlocking, immovable joints
What body part is free moving in the skull?
The jawbone
What is a Fissure?
Any wide gap between bones
Where does the Coronal (surture) connect?
Between the Frontal and partieal bones
Where does the Lamboidal (surture) connect?
Between the occipital and parietal bones
Where does the Squamosal (surture) connect?
Between the temporal and parietal bones
Where does the Saggital (surture) connect?
Between the parietal bones
What is a Fontanels?
“soft spots” on an infants skull
What is the Cranium made up of?
8 large flat bones and 2 bones that are not connected
Which 8 bones make up the Cranium?
Frontal bone, Parietal bones (paired), Temporal bones, Occipital bones, Sphenoid Bone, Ethmoid Bones

What is the Frontal bones?
forms the forehead, the bony projections under the eyebrow and the superior part of each eyes orbit

What are the Parietal Bones?
the paried parietal bones form most of the superior and lateral walls of the cranium

What are the Temporal bones?
Lie inferior to the pariteal bones

What are the Occipital bones?
Most posteior bone of the cranium . Forms the floor and the wall of the skull

What is the Sphenoid bone and what is its shape?
Spans the width of the skull and forms part of the floor of the cranial cavity. It is butterfly shaped

What is the Ehmoid bone?
Very irregularly shaped; lies anterior to sphenoid. Forms the roof of the nasal cavity and part of the medial walls of the orbit.

What is a Foramen in regards to the skull?
refers to the opening of the skull, nerves and blood vessels leave this opening supply the face
