Chapter 7 - the Breathing System Flashcards
What is inhaling?
Breathing in
What is exhaling?
Breathing out
What happens during breathing?
- We breath oxygen into our lungs
- The oxygen passes from our lungs into our bloodstream
- The blood carries the oxygen to the cells for Respiration
- CO2 and H2O are waste products of respiration
- They passes back from cells to bloodstream to lungs
- The lungs breath out the C02 and water vapour
What are the functions of the breathing system?
- To take in oxygen gas for respiration
- To remove waste carbon dioxide gas
- to remove waste water vapour
What is the larynx?
- voice box
- responsible for sound
What is the lungs?
The breathing organ
What is the intercostal muscle?
Causes the rib cage to move up and down during breathing
What is the diaphram?
A sheet of muscle which moves up and down during breathing causing air to move in and out of the lungs
What is the trachea?
Allows air to pass in and out of the lungs
What are the rings of cartilage?
Keep the air tubes open
What is the brochus?
Keep the air tubes open
What are the bronchioles?
Thin tubes that carry air within the lungs
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs covered by a network of narrow blood vessels
What is gaseous exchange?
Gaseous exchange occurs when nitrogen from the air is swapped with carbon dioxide from the body
What are the dangers of smoking?
- tar in tobacco damages the lining of the bronchioles ; bronchitis
- nicotine damages heart and blood vessels
- lung cancer
- carbon monoxide causes heart strain
