Chapter 7.3.1 (Exam 4) Pathways Flashcards
Signal Transduction Spreads the Response to a Signal through the Cell (11 cards)
What is one example of a signal transduction pathway?
MAPK pathway/protein kinase cascade and involves the activity of Ras (G protein)
What happens in the MAPK pathway if the Ras protein is abnormal?
The abnormal Ras is permanently bound to GTP, causing continuous cell division
Describe the first step of the MAPK pathway.
A growth factor binds to a receptor that phosphorylates itself
What is the second step in the MAPK pathway?
The phosphorylation of the receptor triggers a series of events leading to Ras, a G protein, dropping its GDP and picking up a GTP in the cytoplasm, which activates the Ras
What happens once the Ras protein is activated in the MAPK pathway?
The Ras-GTP complex binds to and activates MAP3K
What is the function of an active MAP3K?
It phosphorylates MAP2K and activates it
The active MAP2K phosphorylates MAPK and activates it
What is the role of a the phosphorylated MAPK?
It enters the nucleus and activates cell division genes
What does MAPK stand for?
Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase
What is the MAPK pathway an example of?
A protein kinase cascade
What happens in a protein kinase cascade?
In a protein kinase cascade, one protein kinase activates the next, and so on
