Chapter 9 Flashcards
(24 cards)
Big data
Data sets so lage, complex or rapidly changing that traditional software or databases cannot process or manage the data
Branching questions
Route respondents around survey questions they do not need to answer
Break-off rate
The proportion of respondents who fail to complete a survey once it is started
Check boxes
A survey response format that allows respondents to select as many answers as they wish from a list
Cohort
A group of people defined most typically by having an event in common
Cross-lagged surveys
Surveys that measure the relationship between a dependent variable and an independent variable at two points in time
Cross-sectional surveys
Surveys taken at one point in time, as opposed to trend studies
Dichotomous questions
Questions that offer a choice between two possible answers (yes or no)
Double negative
A combination of negative wording with a double-barreled question, almost guaranteed to confuse respondents
Double-barreled questions
Questions that ask two questions simultaneously but allow for only one answer
Filter question
Questions that determine whether respondents are qualified to answer an upcoming question and that typically redirect that respondent to another question if they are not
Funnel/Interved funnel
A set of questions that move from general to specific or vice versa
Intercept surveys
Surveys are conducted from a base such as a shopping mall. Interviewers ask passersby to participate in the survey, thus eliminating the cost of door-to-door surveys
Leading questions
Questions worded to lead respondents to a particular answer rather than to the one they might genuinely given
Longitudinal studies
Studies that track people’s changes in knowledge, attitude or behaviour over time
Multiple-choice questions
Questions that offer respondents a selection of answers from which they are instructed to select one or more
Negative wording
Questions phrased using a negative rather than a positive
Panel
A group of the same individuals retained to answer questions over time
Questionnaire
A set of questions to which respondents reply
Radio buttons
Choices presented in an online survey response format that permits only one response from a list
Slider
An online survey response option that allows respondents to drag a pointer to select a precise point on a scale
Survey
A research method in which predetermined, formatted questions are distributed to relatively large numbers of people.
Text boxes
An online survey response option that allows respondents to type responses in their own words, limited only by the size of the text boxes
Trend studies
Studies that measure the same items over time, but draw different samples from the population to do so
