Who were the United Empire Loyalists?
They were the Americans that didn’t want to fight against Britain so they moved to North America to escape persecution.
Why did the United States declare war on Canada in 1812?
Britain was at war with Napoleon and not letting any country trade with the French, the Americans stated that Britain couldn’t stop them trading with the French. Britain starts taking America ships and sailors going to France, America then starts war on Britain and attacks Canada.
When did the War of 1812 end and who won?
December 24, 1814. It was basically a stalemate.
Why did the War of 1812 create a sense of nationalism in Canada?
Canada defeated the Americans because we settled our differences and worked together.
Why was the American Civil War a catalyst for Confederation of the Canadian colonies?
The United States attacked Canada in 1812 and almost won, after the Civil War they had the largest most industrialized army that could defeat Canada more easily. The Canadian colonies come together into what is now Canada.
Why did Great Britain permit Canada to become a sovereign nation?
Yes, they didn’t want another American revolution and hoped that if Canada was permitted to be independent they would stay in the British empire. The British empire costs a lot to maintain and Britain wanted Canada to pay their own way.
Why did the Americans expand westward?
They decided a conflict with Canada would be more difficult compared to the aboriginal nations of the west.
What was the American aboriginal policy in 1871?
The United States government passed a new law stating that native American groups were no longer independent nations and instead are now wards of the government to be taken care of and as such are really US citizens. This means that if the native resist they are traitors to be put down.
What was the American aboriginal population in America by the 1890s?
It was reduced to 250000 native Americans.
Why was the Canadian government concerned with the prairies by 1871?
If Canada didn’t make settlements on the south boarders America was going to try and settle there.
Why did both the Canadian government and aboriginal people want to negotiate treaties?
Canada needed to settle the prairies quickly and didn’t have the time to forcefully take it, and the first nations didn’t want the Americans to do to them what they did to the first nations in the south.

What did the aboriginals receive in exchange for the land?
In exchange for the land Canada promised to give the first nations various items like cash, blankets, tools, farming supplies and so on.
What did the construction of the railroad permit Clifford Sifton to do?
It allowed him to go get settlers to live in this land.
Why was Louis Riel executed?
Louis Riel fought 2 rebellions against the Canadian government wen they tried to take the land without negotiating. He fought the Red River and North West rebellions. This convinced the Canadian government to negotiate. He is a hero to the first nations and the French.
What was the Canadian government’s primary method to assimilate aboriginal people and did it work?
Residential schools were schools that kids were forced to go to and no it wasn’t successful.
Why was the United States so divisive following the American revolution?
Because of slavery.
Why were the southern states dependent on slavery?
Their primary source of income was agricultural and they thought the only way to make profit was free labour.
Why did the northern states require paid workers?
They were a factory economy and they needed paid workers to buy the stuff they were making.
