Communication
Act of expressing or transmitting ideas, information, knowledge, thoughts, and feelings, as well as understanding what is expressed by others.
Confrontation
Technique used to resolve conflicts by expressing ones views and feelings about the conflict and inviting the others involved to express their views and feelings as well in order to negotiate a mutually beneficial solution
Constructive criticism
Well intentioned feedback following a mistake or performance error that may come across in a negative fashion.
Descriptive feedback
Communication that, rather than saying “good job” or making a general statement, describes what was done well.
Empathetic listening
Process of hearing what others say with the intent of deeply and completely understanding their perspective.
Instructional feedback
Corrective or descriptive feedback.
Nonreinforcement
Failure to acknowledge effort made, skill execution, and performance improvements
Nonverbal communication
Kinds of communication other than using words, such as actions, facial expressions, body positioning, and gestures.
Paraphrasing
Actively listening to the message communicated by another person, then describing it in your own words.
Punishment
Consequence that decreases the likelihood that an athlete will repeat the certain action or behavior.
Reinforcement
Consequence that increases the likelihood that an athlete will try to repeat a given behavior in the future.
Shaping
Reinforcing successive or close approximations or a desired behavior.
Active listening
Process of participating firsthand in the communication process as a listener, rather than just passively hearing what is said.
