Chapter6 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Cued relaxation
Strategy for condition feelings of deep relaxation to a “cue word” so that with repetition, the cue word will trigger rapid relaxation in a few seconds.
Diaphragmic breathing
Type of breathing in which athletes fill their lungs fully by expanding the diaphragm; also a yoga based relaxation strategy.
Energization
Process of getting into an optimal energy zone, the psychological state that helps athletes perform their best.
Energy machine
Imagery strategy in which athletes imagine receiving an energy transfusion from a powerful outside source.
Healing white light
Imagery technique in which athletes imagine a personal power source that both heals and energizes their body.
Imagery energization
Energy technique that involves imagining a previous experience in which the performer was highly activated and energized.
Imagery relaxation
Relaxation technique that involves imagining a visit to a place that promotes feelings of comfort, safety, and relaxation.
Mind to muscle techniques
Strategies such as imagery relaxation designed to calm the mind in order to relax the body.
Muscle to mind techniques
Relaxation strategies such as diaphragmic breathing designed to relax the body in order to calm the mind.
Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR)
Relaxation strategy used to diagnose and relieve excess tension by first tensing and then relaxing specific muscle groups.
Psych-up breathing
Energization strategy that helps increase symptoms of automatic arousal through a quick, shallow breathing process that is associated with sport and with the Lamaze child birth technique.
Rapid relaxation
Abbreviated relaxation strategy designed to allow athletes to relax optimally in a few seconds.
Relaxation
Process of decreasing unwanted muscular tension, reducing excessive activation of the sympathetic nervous system, and calming the mind by keeping it productively occupied.
Self directed relaxation (SDR)
Relaxation strategy that is an abbreviated version of progressive muscle relaxation; involves focusing on specific muscle groups and systematically releasing tension.
Threshold level
Upper limit of tension at which relaxation strategies can be used effectively to manage stress symptoms.
Total relaxation
Full length strategy designed to help athletes relax as completely as possible.
Cued energization
Strategy for conditioning feelings of strong energization to a “cue word” so that with repetition, the cue word will trigger rapid energization in a few seconds.
