Chapter8️⃣ Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is pressure?
on a surface is a ratio of force to area—the net force acting perpendicular to the surface and the area over which it acts
What is formula for pressure?
pressure= force/area
What is fluid pressure?
We can conclude that at a given point in a body of water, the pressure is exerted equally in all directions
How is pressure measured?
In pascals or Newton’s per square meter
Who is Blaise pascal?
A seventeenth century Christian philosopher and physicist
What is hydrostatic pressure?
Water pressure due to depth alone
What is a Mercury barometer?
thick-walled glass tube filled with liquid mercury and sealed on one end. When the tube was upended in a bowl of mercury so that air wouldn’t enter the tube, the level of mercury in the column dropped a short distance. At that point the atmospheric pressure on the mercury in the bowl equaled the weight of the mercury in the column
Who created the Mercury barometer?
Evangelista Torricelli
What is absolute pressure?
Zero pressure
What is aneroid barometers?
more compact than the meter-long mer- cury barometer. Aneroid barometers contain a sealed accordion- like can filled with a low-pressure gas. The can, which flexes with changing atmospheric pressure, is linked to a pointer through a gear mechanism.
Fluid pressures in mechanical systems and pipes are measured with what?
Mechanical gauges
Gauge pressure in a system equals the what in the system minus atmospheric pressure?
Absolute
What does a bourdon tube do?
Bourdon tube senses changes in pressure by flexing as fluid pressure changes inside the tubing. It’s a c shaped tube.
What is a tsunameter?
A instrument that is placed at the bottom of the ocean to measure the pressure to warn people when a tsunami is coming
What is boyancy?
The lifting force that applies to floating and submerged objects
What is specific gravity?
Scientists and engineers have established a way to compare the den- sity of a substance with the density of water. This comparison is called relative density or specific gravity
What is fluid mechanics?
the study of how fluids flow and how forces and energy are transmitted through fluids
What is pascal’s principle?
From his experiment Pascal reasoned that changes of pressure on the
surface of a confined fluid are exerted equally throughout the fluid and at all points on the fluid’s container.
What is boyle’s law?
It has a j tube and the more pressure of air put on the Mercury the lower the volume of the Mercury would go.
