Characteristics Of Life Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the definition of movement?
A change of position
Animals move their whole body from place to place, while plants can only move parts of their body, such as leaves towards the sun.
What is respiration?
The release of energy in cells from glucose
It is a chemical reaction represented by the word equation: Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy. Not to be confused with breathing.
Does respiration occur in all living organisms?
Yes, it occurs in all living cells including bacteria, fungi, and plants.
What is sensitivity in living organisms?
The ability to detect changes in the environment and respond to them
Individuals need information from the environment to carry out other life processes.
Give an example of sensitivity in plants and animals.
Plants grow towards light and animals may move in response to pain.
What is the definition of growth?
A permanent increase in size
Individuals start off small and grow bigger as they age. Animals usually have a maximum size, while plants can continue to grow throughout their life.
What is reproduction?
The process that creates new individuals to replace those that have died and ensure the survival of the species.
What is excretion?
The removal of poisonous waste products made by chemical reactions of cells
Poo is not considered excretion as it is leftover material the body cannot use.
What are some waste products from animals?
- Carbon dioxide
- Urea
- Water
What is nutrition?
The process of obtaining energy for all other characteristics of life
Plants make their own food through photosynthesis, while animals consume substances made by plants and other animals.
What is homeostasis?
The processes used to maintain a steady balance inside the body
Examples include keeping body temperature constant and regulating glucose levels in the blood.
