Chemistry Rates of Reaction Flashcards

(8 cards)

1
Q

What is the setup for the experiment that shows how surface area affects the rate of reaction.

A

A delivery tube leads from the top of a conical flask into a trough, the end of the tube submerged underwater. A measuring cylinder is placed upside down on top of the end of the tube, and clamped in place.

Q

What is the method for the experiment that shows how surface are affects the rate of reaction?

A

Put a specified amount of HCl in the conical flask.
Fill a measuring cylinder with water, invert it when in the trough, and clamp it in place.
Measure a specified amount of large marble chips on a balance, and add them to the conical flask. Read the measuring cylinder and take results every 10 seconds.
Repeat the process with medium sized marble chips, small marble chips and marble powder.

Q

What does the fact that smaller marble chips react faster show?

A

Rate of reaction is increased when the SA:V ratio is increased, as smaller objects have increased SA compared to their volume.

Q

How can you measure rate of reaction?

A

Measure the speed at which the reactants disappear, or the speed at which products are produced. eg. Measuring the volume of gas that is produced.

Q

What is the method for the experiment that shows how temperature affects the rate of reaction?

A

Pour a specified amount of sodium thiosulfate and a specified amount of water into a conical flask. Measure the temperature of this solution.
Place the flask on a cross. Measure out a specified amount of HCl and add it to the conical flask.
Time how long it takes for the cross to no longer be visible through the flask.
Repeat several times but heat the sodium thiosulfate solution more each time.

Q

How do catalysts increases the rate of reaction?

A

Catalysts provide an alternative energy pathway that decreases the activation energy needed for collisions to be successful.
