A

It was introduced because lots of people were spending all their money on alcohol and neglecting their families and children.
Also, movements such as the temperance movement were growing and believed that there were too many bars in America.
Additionally, the government and business owners such as Henry Ford didn’t want a drunken workforce.

A

It was very hard to police, as there weren’t enough staff and many people were against it.
Most people wanted alcohol and police could be bribed to turn a blind eye.
Moonshine was illegally made and there were cases of people going blind or dying from drinking it.

How did prohibition lead to the rise of gangsters?

A

Prohibition lead to the rise of organised crime as gangs would make money out of smuggling beer into speakeasies. Different gangs would fight over control of beer. A famous gang leader was Al Capone.
In Chicago between 1926 and 1927 there were 130 murders due to gangs fighting each other and not one arrest.

In the early 1900s women were expected to wear long dresses, long hair and not involve themselves very much with men who weren't there husbands. In the 1920s young women were expected to have short, bobbed hair, wear short skirts and smoke.

Young women could now by simple fashions in any store and were expected to look fashionable.

At a protest against the hanging of a black man, a black man shot a white man. This was followed by a massacre of black wall street. 35 blocks were burned to the ground and over 300 black people were killed.

Hitler tried to take over the government but failed. In 1924 Hitler was imprisoned. The original sentence was 5 years but he actually spent less than a year. Here he wrote "Mein Kampf."

What was the Reichstag Fire in February 1933?
The Reichstag, the German Parliament was set on fire, and a Dutch communist was caught. Hitler used this to his advantage by persuading President Hindenburg to pass a law restricting personal freedom.

After the Reichstag Fire, Hitler was given emergency powers which allowed him to make new laws without the approval of the Reichstag.

Ernst Röhm, the leader of the SA, was demanding that the SA should take over the army, but Hitler wanted proper generals, so on 30 June 1934, the SS murdered around 400 members of the SA, including Röhm, and a number of Hitler's political opponents.

President Hindenburg died, and Hitler declared himself the supreme Führer of Germany.

An extracurricular activity that became mandatory in 1939. It involved sports and army drills, but also many hours of indoctrination. It made young people feel important and elevated their status.

Hitler believed that the role of women was to give birth to and raise children for Germany. They were encouraged to have as many children as possible and given medals for having 4, 6 and 8 children.

There was a secret police force known as the Gestapo who dressed up as normal people and could arrest and torture anyone who went against Nazi ideals. This terrified normal people. Additionally, the SS and SA could send people to concentration camps.
