When the Republican party came to power, they operated a system of Laissez Faire Leadership, which meant that they left businesses alone as much as possible, so that they could grow and develop the economy.

Goods could be produced more quickly, meaning they could be sold and profited from at a faster rate.
How did the introduction of credit lead to an economic boom in 1920s America?
People could now pay after they bought something or pay over time, making it easier and more common for people to buy expensive products such as cars.
How did new invention and new consumer goods lead to an economic boom in 1920s America?
Lots of new inventions were being created, such as cars, telephones, radios and fridges, and because of the new credit system they were affordable and fashionable for many people to buy.

The USA had made lots of money selling firearms and ammunition to Europe during WW1 and already had a strong economy.

After WW1 the USA had lots of left over ammunition factories that weren’t useful anymore so they turned them into factories for creating advertisements so that people would buy certain products.

Tariffs meant that the USA taxed foreign goods more, encourage people to buy local ones to help grow the American economy.

By 1929, America produced 50% of all consumer goods, leading to increase in living standards and working conditions of America.

The economic boom created a society that wanted to be very self-sufficient; people would refuse help from their parents bosses, and the Government as they wanted to only rely on themselves. Rugged individualism was when people wanted to work as much as possible, refusing breaks, and days off.
What was the stock market?
People could put their money into shares, tiny parts of a company, and if that company did well they could sell the share for more money. People earned millions doing this.

Why didn’t farmers benefit from the economic boom in 1920s America?
There was less demand for produce to be exported due to trade tariffs.
Improved machinery meant that farmers were overproducing so the price of produce fell.
Why didn’t unskilled labourers benefit from the economic boom?
As farms closed down, unskilled labourers were forced to move into nearby cities where there was little demand for them, leading to lots of unemployment.
Why didn’t coal miners benefit from the economic boom?
Demand for coal decreased with new industries such as oil and electricity.

Cinema formed and movies became a huge industry.
Jazz became very popular among young people.
What was prohibition and when was it brought in?
Prohibition was introduced in 1920 and made the buying, selling and manufacture of alcohol illegal.
Why was prohibition introduced?
It was introduced because lots of people were spending all their money on alcohol and neglecting their families and children.
Also, movements such as the temperance movement were growing and believed that there were too many bars in America.
Additionally, the government and business owners such as Henry Ford didn’t want a drunken workforce.
What was moonshine?
Alcohol that was brewed at home using ordinary utensils. It could be dangerous.
What were speakeasies?
Illegal, underground bars.
Who were bootleggers?
People who illegally supplied alcohol.
Why was the prohibition not very successful?
It was very hard to police, as there weren’t enough staff and many people were against it.
Most people wanted alcohol and police could be bribed to turn a blind eye.
Moonshine was illegally made and there were cases of people going blind or dying from drinking it.
How did prohibition lead to the rise of gangsters?
Prohibition lead to the rise of organised crime as gangs would make money out of smuggling beer into speakeasies. Different gangs would fight over control of beer. A famous gang leader was Al Capone.
In Chicago between 1926 and 1927 there were 130 murders due to gangs fighting each other and not one arrest.
