-Children are fundamentally different from adults
Cognitive Development Theory
Recognizing that the world contains objects and people that exist even when you don’t see them
Object Permanence
Length of time activities are pursued with or without obstacles
Attention
Susceptibility to extraneous environmental stimuli in interfering with ongoing behavior
Distractibility
Amount of stimulation needed to evoke a discernible response in children
Sensory Threshold
An enduring emotional bond that humans feel toward the special people in their lives
Attachment
Refers to an individuals behavioral style. I.e. the characteristic way he or she experiences and reacts with the environment
Temperament
Baby is independent with no use of mother as a base
Insecure avoidant
Baby shows healthy pattern of attachment
-Quickly use mother as base
Securely attached infants
Baby is clingy and shows limited exploration away from mother
Insecure ambivalent
Insecure avoidant means that the mother (home) is
Insensitive
Insecure ambivalent means that the mother (house) is
Inconsistent
Occurs when the child has developed object permanence but does not have the linguistic and social skills to negotiate a relationship with the new person
Stranger anxiety
When a previously secure toddler intermittently checks in with parent
Rapprochement
Child shows extreme distress when separated from caregiver or loved one
-Results in impairment in typical age appropriate routines
Separation anxiety disorder
A child younger than 18 whose physical, mental, or emotional condition has been impaired or is in imminent danger of becoming impaired as a result of parent exercising a minimum degree of care
Neglect
Characterized by intense emotional distress and disturbed sleep
Neglect
Shows hypervigilance and difficulty with emotional regulation
