When was the Chicago convention?
1944
What happened during the Chicago convention?
ICAO was ratified and all 52 states signed the convention for civil aviation
How many members are in the ICAO?
193 - discluding Liechtenshein and Tuvalu
What does SARP stand for?
Standards and recommended practices
What is the ICAO documents made up of?
19 Annexes and 12,000 SARPs
What is a standard practice?
Something that ‘shall’ be followed
A hard law that all member states must comply with
What is a recommended practise?
Something that ‘should’ be followed
An optional regulation

Contracting state
Countries which are currently members of ICAO
Sovereignty
Each state has complete soveriegnty/ control over the airspace above its territory
Suzerainty
Each state has a contract to adopt all rules and regulations from the ICAO
These will be used as STATE laws
Cabotage
The transport of goods or passengers between two places in the same country by an operator who comes from another country
(only concerns domestic flights)
Territory (ICAO)
The land areas and waters which border that state over which it has sovereignty, this has no upper limit
Scheduled flights
A flight which has been agreed to between states concerning the schedule detail
Non-scheduled flights
An aircraft shall have the right to land in another terrritory or transit non-stop across other states -
despite political or economic reasons
eg. privately charted flights
Rules of the air
The state will adopt measures to ensure that all aircraft within or carrying its registration mark will comply with rules
Facilitation
The process of minimising delay of movement of passengers through airports
