circulatory system Flashcards
(13 cards)
function of circulatory system
Brings oxygen, nutrients and hormones to cells;
fights infections;
removes cell wastes;
regulates body temperature
what are the main organs in circulatory system in groupings
Heart
Blood Vessels
-Arteries
-Veins
-Capillaries
Blood
blood travel order
heart → artery → capillary → vein → heart
what is the heart and what does it do
Size of a fist;
Weighs less than a pound
Flanked by lungs; rests on diaphragm
pumps blood through the body
what is blood what does it do
Tissue that’s made up of
red blood cells, white blood
cells, plasma, platelets
what do red blood cells do
Red Blood Cells: carry oxygen and give blood its red color
what do white blood cells do
White Blood Cells: fight infection
what do platelets do
Platelets: help cuts, scrapes, and wounds clot
what does plasma do?
Plasma: the liquid part of blood, transports nutrients, proteins, and hormones throughout the body
what are arteries what do they do
Move blood away from the heart
Have thick and elastic walls made of smooth muscles
Are connected to ventricles in the heart
Most carry oxygenated blood (red)
associated diseases
Plaque formation in arteries is a serious cardiovascular disease (CVD):
Heart attack
Stroke
Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
Renal artery stenosis (RAS)
what do veins do
Move blood towards the heart
Are squeezed by skeletal muscles
Carry blood with waste materials that is oxygen poor
Most carry deoxygenated blood (purple)
what are capillaries and what do they do
Microscopic blood vessels
Their walls are only one cell thick
Capillaries connect arteries to veins and allow for gas, nutrients, and waste exchange
Allow exchange of gases through thin walls
Drop off oxygen delivered from heart by arteries
Pick up CO2 and send it to the heart thru veins
