respriatorysystem Flashcards
(16 cards)
fnction
provides oxygen needed for cellular respiration and removes carbon dioxide from the body
list organs in path of air in order
nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, bronchioles, alveoli
what does the nose and mouth do
Passageway into respiratory system that helps to warm air. Hairs and mucus filter air.
what does the pharynx (throat do)
Transports air, food, and water, includes parts of the trachea and esophagus;
Little hairs called cilia line the pharynx to filter air
what does the larynx do
Vocal cords are stretched across larynx opening and contract/relax to make sound
what does the trachea do:
Carries air from larynx to lungs. Covered in cartilaginous rings for protection
what do bronchial tubes do?
Two tubes split off from trachea - one tube goes to each lung. Each tube splits into tiny tubes called BRONCHIOLES (7)
what do aveoli do:
Tiny sacs in LUNGS (8) surrounded by capillaries exchange gases (oxygen enters bloodstream and carbon dioxide exits).
what is the diaphram and what does it do
large dome-shaped muscle used in breathing
respiration definition:
When the body obtains and uses oxygen and removes carbon dioxide & water as waste.
what are the two parts of breathing?
breathing and cellular respiration
what are the parts of the breahthing process?
Inhale: diaphragm muscle contracts, moving down and causing the lungs to expand
Exhale: diaphragm relaxes, air moves out through the mouth automatically
what is the cellular respiration process?
chemical reaction that converts glucose from food into ATP energy in the presence of oxygen
what doe we need oxygen for?
Humans need food and oxygen for the process of respiration which produces energy within individual body cells.
cellar respiration equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
respriatory diseases
Bronchitis - an irritation of the breathing passages in which they become narrower than normal and may be clogged with mucus
Asthma- constriction of the smooth muscles around the respiratory passageways frequently caused by an allergic reaction
Lung Cancer- when cancerous growths, or tumors take away space in the lungs that could be used for gas exchange
