Q

What is sperm, and what are they?

A

The male sex cells, or gametes.
Produced in the testes.
Holds half the DNA for offspring; also called being haploid (N).
Highly mobile cell.
Very small in size (0.05 cm diameter).

Q

What is the scrotum and what does it do?

A

Pouch-like structure that holds the pair of testes outside the body cavity
Keeps temperature slightly lower than the rest of the body

Q

what is the urethra and what does it do?

A

connects the urinary bladder to the penis for excretion and contains glands that release fluids (i.e. urine and sperm)

16
Q

what do the ovaries do?

A

Produce eggs (gamete)
Produces hormones like estrogen and progesterone, which control the menstrual cycle
(Puberty)
Ex. : larger mammary glands, menstrual cycle

17
Q

What happens int he ovaries during puberty?

A

At birth, females have 1-2 million undeveloped ova called oocytes.
At puberty, one oocyte per month will mature inside a fluid-filled sac called a follicle until it is an ovum.
Once mature, the ovum exits the ovary in a process called ovulation.

18
Q

what are the fallopian tubes what do they do?

A

The 2 fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the top of the uterus.
Serve as a site of fertilization and to deliver the developing embryo to the uterus to grow

19
Q

What happens when sperm cells encounter an egg along its journey?

A

Fertilization may occur if sperm cells encounter an egg along its journey.

20
Q

what is the unterus and what is its job?

A

a hollow, muscular organ located above the vagina
main job is to protect and nourish the fetus during development.

21
Q

what is the cervix?

A

cervix is the narrow, lower part that links the uterus with the vagina.

22
Q

what happens in the ffallopian tubes

A

Once the egg is released from the ovary, it will be transported to the uterus
Fertilization occurs here (sperm + egg) - if not menstural cycle will begin

23
Q

what is menstrual cycle

A

The menstrual cycle is a series of changes to hormone levels and the lining of the uterus that prepare the body for pregnancy.

24
Q

facts about menstrual cycle

A

Mature egg is released every 28 days.
Wall of uterus thickens for implantation.
Wall breaks down if no fertilization occurs.
Involves hormonal control between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland & ovary.
Begins with puberty (10-14 yrs).
Ends with menopause (45-50 yrs).
Stops during pregnancy.

25
what is internal fertilization
Sperm is deposited directly into female reproductive system
26
what are the effects of internal fertilization?
Increased odds of fertilization = less offspring Small number of offspring Offspring are protected during development.
27
what is internal fertilization most common in?
sharks and most land animals
28
what is external fertilization?
Females release eggs into open water Male releases sperm into water to fertilize eggs
29
What are some effects of external fertilization?
High numbers of egg & sperm ensure fertilization Large number of offspring Offspring not well protected during development.
30
what is external fertilization most common within?
Common in fish & amphibians
31
What is in Vitro fertilization?
IVF is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) where an egg and a sperm are fertilized outside a woman’s body in a lab
32
what is IVF usually used for?
to overcome infertility
33
when is an embryo created?
After fertilization, the zygote travels to the uterus and begins dividing.
34
what happens 5-6 days after fertilization?
the zygote is a ball of 100+ cells called a blastocyst which implants in the endometrium and continues to grow and mature
35
what happens to 10-12 days after fertilization?
the blastocyst begins to resemble a human with a head and limbs and is now called an embryo.
36
What is a placenta and what does it do?
The placenta is the connection between mother and embryo provides oxygen O2 and food to the developing child and removes CO2 and wastes. Alcohol, drugs, and other harmful substances may also pass through the placenta to the embryo
37
what is the ubilical?
The umbilical cord is a ropelike structure connecting the placenta to the embryo.
38
what happens in the uterus as the embryo and fetus develope?
Cells divide without becoming larger (cleavage). After a few days, cells begin to differentiate – that is they start to form different types of cells (nerve, skin, bone, etc).
39
What does the umbilical cord do for the fetus?
The placenta also removes waste produced by the fetus. Waste (CO2, urea, salts) diffuses from the placenta into the mother's blood. Since the fetus does not eat solid food, it does not have to eliminate feces.
