Circulatory System Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the function of the circulatory system?
To transport oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells and remove waste like carbon dioxide.
What are the main parts of the circulatory system?
The heart, blood vessels, and blood.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle.
Where does deoxygenated blood enter the heart?
Into the right atrium via the vena cava.
Where does the right ventricle send blood?
To the lungs through the pulmonary artery.
What happens in the lungs?
Blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
Where does oxygenated blood return to the heart?
To the left atrium via the pulmonary veins.
Where does the left ventricle send blood?
To the rest of the body through the aorta.
What do arteries do?
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart under high pressure (except the pulmonary artery).
What do veins do?
Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart and have valves to prevent backflow (except the pulmonary veins).
What are capillaries?
Tiny vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and waste are exchanged with tissues.
What do red blood cells (RBCs) do?
They carry oxygen using hemoglobin.
What do white blood cells (WBCs) do?
They fight infections (e.g., lymphocytes, neutrophils).
What do platelets do?
They help form blood clots to prevent bleeding.
What is plasma?
The fluid part of blood that carries nutrients, hormones, and waste.
