Cirrhosis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is cirrhosis?
A progressive liver disease caused by long-term inflammation, leading to fibrosis and regenerative nodules that impair liver function. Usually develops over 10–20 years.
What is compensated cirrhosis?
An asymptomatic phase where the liver still functions effectively.
What is decompensated cirrhosis?
A symptomatic phase with complications like jaundice, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, or variceal bleeding.
Name 3 major risk factors for cirrhosis.
Alcohol use
Hepatitis B or C
Obesity or Type 2 diabetes (especially with NAFLD)
List any 3 complications of cirrhosis.
Malnutrition and frailty
Hepatic encephalopathy
Variceal bleeding
What diagnostic clues suggest cirrhosis?
Symptoms like fatigue, bruising, itching; signs such as jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly; and risk factors.
Why should drug prescribing be minimized in severe liver disease?
Because drug metabolism is impaired and toxicity risk is increased due to reduced liver function.
Which drugs can worsen fluid overload in cirrhosis?
NSAIDs and corticosteroids.
