Class test 2 Flashcards
Explain the 1% method
Getting better by 1% daily may feel discouraging because it seems like we’re not making any pregress but in reality it ensures a steady progress. If we keep it up for a whole year, we should be better by 37% at the end of it.
If we neglect the practice and get worse by 1% every day, we will end up at 0%
What is the testing effect, how does it relate do learning?
Testing strengthens memory and helps with storing the information.
Mock test that we prepare ourselves can help us prepare for an exam better, the brain has to think about both the answer and the question.
Plateau of Latent Potential
Similarly to the 1% method we might feel like no progress is being made because we expect a lineal porgress but the results of our hard work will show only when the skill is utilized over time.
Long-term benefits of retrieval practice compared to cramming for a test
Recall from memory is way more effective than simple rereading. Flash cards are a great retrieval tool, if we practice retrieval, the inforamtion is used actively and will get stored in the long-term memory.
Repetion suggests stronger retention.
How does delayed feedback influence learning?
Any corrective feedback is good for learning but getting the feedback immediately after taking the exam won’t store it in the long-term memory. Spaced out practice is more benefital and the same goes for feedback
Relationship between knowledge retention and the effort behind retrieval
Practicing retrieval makes memory more durable.
The more effort and time we put into it, the stronger the retention will be.
