What is species and taxonomy?
Putting animals and plants into groups
What order did Linnaeus come up with>
Kingdom (plants)
Phylum (flowering plants)
Class (dicots)
Order (roses and their allies)
Family (rose family)
Genus (Rosa)
species (Rosa Gallica)
What are the 5 kingdoms?
Plants
Animals
Fungi
Bacteria
Protists
What is taxonomy?
A phylogenetic classification system attempts to arrange species into groups based on their evolutionary origins and relationships. It uses a hierarchy in which smaller groups are placed within larger groups, with no overlap between groups. Each group is called a taxon (plural taxa).
What is phylogenetic?
relating to the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms, or of a particular feature of an organism.
What is hierarchy?
the systemic organisation of organisms into levels.
What are the classifications of humans?
- domain - eukaryota
- kingdom - animalia
- phylum - Chordata
- class - mammalia
- order - primata
- family - hominidae
- genus - homo
- species - Homo sapiens
What group organisms are used in taxonomy?
- morphology
- ultrastructure
- embryology
- paleontology
- ethology
- biochemistry
- molecular biology
